SVQ assessment is workplace-based. It focuses on what you actually do in your role, the knowledge and professional judgement that underpin your practice, and your ability to demonstrate competence against the requirements of the qualification.
How it works

Your assessment journey is structured around your role, responsibilities and naturally occurring opportunities to demonstrate competence.
Where and when does assessment occur?
Most assessment takes place through your normal workplace practice as suitable opportunities arise.
Evidence may include workplace observation, professional discussion, reflection, relevant workplace records and questions used to confirm knowledge or practice.
There is no final exam. You and your assessor will plan assessment activity where appropriate, while also making use of naturally occurring evidence from your day-to-day work.
You are not expected to manufacture situations simply to produce evidence
How will I be assessed?
Assessment uses different methods depending on what needs to be demonstrated. Your assessor will select the most appropriate methods to gather evidence of your practice, knowledge and professional judgement.
Assessment decisions are quality assured through philosVQ’s Internal Verification arrangements.
What should I expect from assessment?
Your assessor will help you understand what is required, identify suitable evidence opportunities and make assessment decisions against the qualification requirements.
You will receive feedback throughout your qualification. If further evidence is needed, your assessor will explain what remains to be demonstrated and agree an appropriate next step with you.
Your practice must consistently meet the required occupational standards.
What does successful SVQ assessment mean?
Successful assessment means that you have provided sufficient evidence to demonstrate the required occupational competence across your qualification.
Your evidence should show that your practice is:
• authentic – it is your own work and practice
• relevant – it relates to the requirements being assessed
• sufficient – there is enough evidence to support the assessment decision
• current – it reflects your present competence
